Thank you for your interest in partnering
with Hungry Children Project to send Food, Medical Supplies and Medicine
to people in desperate need. The following information outlines commonly
asked questions in regards to timelines, requirements and procedures.
We hope this will help expedite your order.
If you are ordering:
Medicine
To properly and safely meet the requirements of the end user we require
a list of ailments, illnesses or infirmities to help our in-house Doctor
assess what medicines to best offer you to treat the various needs indicated.
We submit an order to the Pharmaceutical Company and they give our in-house
Doctor access to the current inventory (as these medicines are dated,
this inventory is turning over and changing daily). From the current inventory,
our Doctor will attempt to create a custom list that meets the various
needs your organization has indicated as critical. We then send the customized
list back to you for your field physicians to confirm that the chosen
medicines are adequate. Upon confirmation from your field physicians,
we finalize the order with the Pharmaceutical Company. We order the appropriate
size container (40’/20’) to be loaded and shipped to the agreed
destination. This process may take days or sometimes a few weeks.
HCP requires the contact name, organization and local receiving address
with phone numbers, fax number and email. Further, we will require an
‘import certificate’ from most countries in Africa before
the container can be sent from the US. This information will be submitted
in an order form accompanying the Bill of Lading, the manifest (itemized
inventory) and the suggested value of each container. If the organization
that is ordering the shipment is different from the receiver, we need
the partner/sending organization information as well.
Medical Supplies
Medical supplies are supplied by Pharmaceutical Companies preshrunk on
pallets. There is usually a healthy mix of gauze, latex gloves and syringes,
to mention a few items. They try to pack a good selection of supplies
that would be commonly used in a clinic or operating theatre.
HCP can furnish you with a general list of what goes into these pallets,
though it varies from pallet to pallet. Each pallet is accompanied by
a manifest for customs purposes.
To best accommodate you, we generally ask your organization to identify
how many pallets you can use. We occasionally send individual pallets,
but the most cost effective way is to ship 20’ or 40’ containers.
Periodically, we mix food and medical supplies in the same container.
However, we do not mix pharmaceuticals with any other supplies.
Food
Food is a hard commodity to supply, as the need is so great, and therefore
we only ship one container per month, on average. Our supplier packs a
“family box” containing: Assorted Vegetables – Instant
Soups – Cereal – Rice – Beans – Pasta –
Powder Milk – Chick Peas and so on. The content may vary slightly
from box to box. A 40’ container will hold approximately 1200 boxes
each containing enough food for one family for one week.
We are trying to access some bulk food, but this will be on a case-by-case
basis.
Timeline
With the medicine, it may take up to six weeks to get the order on the
ship. The surface shipping will usually take three (3) to six (6) weeks
from door to door. This process has taken as short as six weeks in total,
but also as long as 10 weeks. We have an agreement with DHL Danzas for
all our shipping needs. However, if you have access to other reliable
shippers we will entertain using them if it is a better fit.
Cost
Hungry Children Project does not charge for any of the supplies that
we provide. However, there is a cost associated with the shipping, so
we ask any organization to help us by paying for freight, which totals
an average of $5500 per container. This cost is an average that we have
paid for freight to Africa, South America and Central Asia. It may vary
slightly depending on distance of trucking to the end destination. We
have also faced isolated cases with shipping cost of up to $9,000.
If the organization is not able to pay the entire shipping cost, HCP
has access to some shipping funds to offset the total freight. Please
indicate any financial concerns in regards to the shipping cost upon the
time of ordering.
Shipping
As DHL invoices us upon the pick up of each container, we ask that you
send a check to:
Hungry Children Project, 16520 Vintage St. North Hills, CA 91343 with
each confirmed order.
